Eye Health Outcomes

Overview

Excessive screen time has been linked to eye health problems both in children and adults. The ability of the eye to focus on distant objects develops well into teenagerhood and requires extended periods of time outdoors looking at distant objects. When young people spend too much time indoors and staring at near objects, this process may sometimes be disrupted, increasing the risk of short-sightedness or myopia. As many as 80-90% of young people in developed parts of Asia now have myopia, and evidence suggests that excessive screen time is contributing to the worsening of the global myopia epidemic. Another major and often neglected eye condition associated with excessive device use is digital eye strain (DES) or computer vision syndrome (CVS).
